ECG customer class

Use average kWh from 3–12 months of bills where available. Total prepaid payments may include arrears and charges; use energy-only spend. Providing both actual kWh and spend calibrates your effective rate. Special-load/demand tariffs need a site quotation.

Add what you want to run. We've filled in typical wattages and running hours — change any of them if you know better. Example: 10 lights at 15W for 5 hours. Hours means actual energy-drawing hours. Fridge/freezer defaults are compressor run-hours, not 24 hours at full wattage. Essential-backup modes allow each selected appliance to run for its daily hours or the outage duration, whichever is shorter; refrigerators use their cycling average.

Running air conditioners? They are deliberately left out of the starting list — an AC can easily double the system you need, so we only size for one if you tell us to.

Assumed annual ECG tariff increase (%)

Planning assumption: 5% a year is a starting scenario. Use 0% for no increase, or enter your own assumption. PURC reviews tariffs periodically; future increases are not known. This changes the financial estimate, not your equipment size.

Supply phase

A bill shows energy use, but it cannot reveal your peak load. If you leave the load fields blank, the calculator scales a preliminary outage load from your consumption instead of using a fixed minimum. An engineer must still confirm it.

What matters most?

For Solar first, 4 hours includes normal overnight coverage. Selecting 6, 8 or 12 hours adds 2, 4 or 8 hours of extra reserve at the planned backup load. Other modes use the selected essential loads and backup hours. Battery modules and peak-current requirements can limit how small a system can be.

When do you use most electricity?

Daytime means 06:00–18:00. This split determines overnight battery energy and solar use. Shift water pumping, washing and cooling into sunlight where possible.
